Sergey was born in the city of Tomsk in Siberia (Russia). He began playing the piano aged seven, studying at the specialised music school for gifted children, attached to the Conservatory of Novosibirsk. Subsequently, he studied at the Moscow State University of Culture and Arts, where having gained a Ph.D., he became Professor of Piano and taught for four years. Before coming to the UK Sergey also worked as a repetiteur and coach for Helikon Opera Company in Moscow.

In June 2004, under the tutelage of Professors Malcolm Martineau and Colin Stone, Sergey graduated with distinction from The Royal Academy of Music in London (post-graduate diploma course in Piano Accompaniment). During this period, Sergey won the following prestigious awards: The Serena Nevill Award of The Concordia Foundation; The Leverhulme Prize of The Royal Academy of Music; the Sir Arthur Bliss Prize; the Ludmila Andrew Russian Song Prize; the Frank & Hilda Stokes and Marjorie Meyer Memorial Prize and the Cork Award of The Royal Academy of Music.

A recent participant in The Britten-Pears Young Artists Programme 2004, Sergey took part in masterclasses with Della Jones, Robert Holl and Malcolm Martineau. He returned to Aldeburgh in June 2005 to play Stravinsky's Petrouchka with the Britten-Pears Orchestra in the 58th Aldeburgh Festival. Sergey worked as a repetiteur for British Youth Opera's productions of Cosi fan tutte, Romeo and Juliet, La Boheme and Don Giovanni. Futher engagements included a Russian song recital with ENO Young Artist Lee Bisset at the National Portrait Gallery, Ariadne auf Naxos for City of Birmingham Opera directed by Graham Vick, Eugene Onegin for English Touring Opera and Ariadne auf Naxos for Garsington Opera. During the past season Sergey participated in Tete-a-Tete Opera Festival and Leeds Lieder+ Festival 2007, played for Eliana Pretorian's solo recitals at St. John's Smith Square and Beaminster Festival and also worked on Graham Vick's La Traviata in Birmingham, ETO's production of Susannah, Garsington's production of L'incoronazione di Dario and Iolanta at Opera Holland Park. Future plans include English Touring Opera's production of Rusalka in autumn 2008.
